Presentation Description

Institution: The Children's Hospital, Westmead - NSW, Australia

Background: Sialendoscopy is an emerging technique that acts as both a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for patients with recurrent sialadenitis. The role of sialendoscopy in the paediatric setting is an emerging area of interest in surgical research. Our series represents one of the largest case series on paediatric sialadenoscopy in Australia. Aims: The primary goal of this review is to identify and summarise the intra-operative findings from sialendoscopy performed for recurrent sialadenitis in the paediatric population. Secondary outcomes include identifying the rate of disease recurrence and any complications associated with sialendoscopy. Methodology: A retrospective analysis was performed of cases of sialendoscopy performed as both an independent and concurrent procedure with other operations between January 2017 and December 2024. Data gathered included patient demographics, indication for surgery, pre-operative imaging findings, surgical technique, intra-operative findings, surgical complications and recurrence of sialadenitis on follow-up. Results: 36 patients underwent sialendoscopy with 43 total procedures performed. The average age at time of procedure of 9 years. JRP was the commonest indication for sialadenoscopy. The most common intra-operative finding was sludge, present in 62.8% of cases. Strictures were present in 37.2% of cases. Intra-ductal stones were only identified in 18.6% of cases. At follow-up, 55.6% patients reported no further episodes of sialadenitis, 19.4% reported a reduction in the frequency or severity of sialadenitis episodes whilst 25% reported ongoing episodes at the same frequency or severity. Conclusion: Juvenile recurrent parotitis is the most common indication for sialadenoscopy in paediatric populations. Overall, the majority of patients experienced good long-term resolution or reduction in frequency of symptoms.
